University of Hawai’i Settles Data Breach

University of Hawai’i Settles Data Breach Class Action

The University of Hawai’i has settled a class action data breach lawsuit
involving five data breaches between 2009 through 2011. The settlement will
provide class members with two (2) years of credit monitoring and fraud
restoration services. The settlement in Gross v. University of Hawaii will impact
approximately 98,000 UH students, faculty, alumni, UH employees and others who
were part of the five data breaches. The breaches occurred at University of
Hawai‘i at Manoa, University of Hawai‘i at West Oah‘u, Kapio’lani Community
College, and Honolulu Community College.

“We have researched more than forty (40) data breaches at colleges and
universities across the country. In almost every instance, two years of credit
monitoring and fraud restoration was offered to data breach victims,” said Bruce
Sherman, one of the attorneys representing the class. “Offering two years of credit
monitoring and fraud restoration services to breach victims should be the standard
response by any breaching entity in Hawai’i, including government agencies,”
Sherman noted.

“The settlement is significant for several reasons,” said Thomas Grande,
who also represents the class. “This settlement is the first data breach settlement in
Hawai’i and affects almost 100,000 persons,” Grande noted.

“Credit monitoring provides for continuous checking by a credit agency of a
class member’s credit file. If there is suspicious activity, the class member is
notified immediately and is given assistance to resolve the problem,” Sherman
said.

“Credit monitoring services may cost as much as $5 to $15 per month if
purchased individually. We are extremely pleased that the University has

negotiated a settlement package that provides these services to every class member
who wants them,” Grande said.

The settlement, which is still subject to court approval, will be administered
by Kroll Background America, Inc., a firm specializing in providing credit
monitoring and fraud restoration services. Class members will be sent a letter by
March 1, 2012 that will allow them to sign up for the credit monitoring services
online. University faculty, students and alumni will also be sent e-mails to inform
them of the credit monitoring services.

Naked Cow Dairy Hawaii from Hawaii Secret Dot Com

Here is a dream that should be supported.

The Naked Cow Story and Vision

Naked Cow Dairy is a women-owned, family run cow dairy on the island of Oahu whose mission is to keep the art of caring for dairy cows alive and well in Hawaii and to bring Island-made signature local fresh-churned butter and artisan cheeses to the table. Hand-crafted dairy products ensure the health and happiness of the cows as well as the high quality of the product.

Started by sisters Monique van der Stroom and Sabrina St. Martin, Naked Cow Dairy is a labor of love that fills a void left by the closure of 75 (!) dairies on Oahu in the past  50 years. Monique came to the decision to start Naked Cow after working in other dairies on Oahu and watching each of them struggle and fail to compete with the cheaper mainland imports. She realized that in order to be viable it would be necessary to maximize the potential of the milk by creating value added foods like butter, yogurt and cheese. Sabrina, after leaving New Orleans post Hurricane Katrina, came to the dairy with a vision to expand the culinary reach of the product to restaurant chefs passionate about locally produced food and farmer’s market shoppers eager to support local farms.

The Impact

Hard Fact #1:  In order achieve longed for stability as a family operated agricultural business, Naked Cow Dairy direly needs to start making cheese.  By securing the waiting cheeselover market, this dairy will be able to thrive and grow.

Hard Fact  #2:  100% of cow milk cheese in Hawaii has been imported, some cheeses from more than 25,000 miles away.  Hawaii currently imports at least 80% of the food that we eat.  Let’s put a dent in these numbers!

Semi-soft Fact:  You would be helping Naked Cow Dairy make history by being the first cow milk cheese making operation in Hawaii.

Soft Fact:  Imagine these cheeses made fresh right here on the island with milk from pasture-raised cows: mozzarella, jack, cheddar, gouda, brie, camembert, and more! mmmmm…..

What We Need & What You Get

This campaign’s goal is to raise $15,000 to equip our kitchen with a heating element for our 230 gallon cheese vat & low-temp pasteurizer. This part costs about $7000 to purchase and install. In addition we need to build and outfit a cheese aging room that will keep our delicious cheeses at the right temperature and humidity until they go to market. The equipment and buildout of the space we need is estimated to cost about $8000. With these parts of the puzzle in place we will be on the way to making Hawaii cheesy!!

 Other Ways You Can Help

– Make it a point to get your butter, yogurt and cheeses from Naked Cow Dairy – available at KCC & Kailua Farmers’ Markets, Kapolei Farmers Market, Ala Moana  & Haleiwa Farmers’ Market, Whole Foods Kahala, Maui (and soon Kailua), Foodland, Down to Earth, Kokua Market.

– Tell your friends to make sure to stock their fridges with local milk (real local milk – which is only Big Island Dairy sold as Hawaii Fresh at the moment), butter, yogurt and cheeses.  Let’s grow our dairies instead of losing them!

– If you’re on twitter help spread the word by following us @nakedcowdairy – hashtag for this campaign is #cheesyhawaii

– If you are on Facebook, please like us! "Naked Cow Dairy Hawaii" (listed as a Farm/Agricultural Business)
You and your cheese loving friends can come along for our cheesemaking ride 🙂

– Buy locally grown and locally made always! Know your farmer know your food!!

Let’s help these farmers have their dream become reality!

The Pig and the Lady from Hawaii Business Videos

One of the best kept secrets in Hawaii is the Pig and the Lady, a pop up restaurant in Honolulu.

What’s a "pop up restaurant"?  A pop up restaurant has no permanent home. It is not a virtual space but kind of a moveable feast.  The Pig and the Lady could be here for a while and then disappear. That is the beauty and the curse of the pop up.

The cuisine is New Wave Asian  but tasty and fun. The staff are there to make sure you enjoy your dining experience. The menu rotates all the time. You will discover many different influences. Understand each dish will be expertly prepared with an amazing taste.

Most of the meals served a 5 course price fixed for about $55. Space is limited so you will have to contact them to make reservations.

Classic Hawaii Five-O Theme

For those to young to remember, before the current Hawaii Five-O, there was another Hawaii Five-O.

From Wikipedia, we learn:

The origianl series starred:

For twelve seasons, McGarrett and his team hounded international secret agents, criminals, and organized crime syndicates plaguing the Hawaiian Islands. With the aid of District Attorney and later Hawaii’s Attorney General John Manicote (played by Glenn Cannon), McGarrett was successful in sending most of his enemies to prison. One such Mafia syndicate was led by crime family patriarch Honore Vashon (played by Harold Gould), a character introduced in the fifth season. Most episodes of Hawaii Five-O ended with the arrest of criminals and McGarrett snapping, "Book ’em." The offense occasionally was added after this phrase, for example, "Book ’em, murder one." In many episodes this was directed to Danny Williams and became McGarrett’s catchphrase, "Book ’em, Danno."

This is probably one of the most recognizeable theme songs ever recorded:

Hawaii Artist Esperance: An Artist in Hawaii

Esperance is one of the growing number of artisits in Hawaii.

Let’s face it, Hawaii is certainly art in itself. The scenes, the ocean, the people, the flowers, the food all lend themselve to be show-cased. And who better to do this than a Hawaii Artist.

Esperance paints from the heart. He feels and he uses his painintg to express that rare emotion that has bubbled out of him. He then uses hos brus and colors to catpture that on a canvas.

From his website:

Esperance has a rare gift for painting. His father painted, and he has grown up painting from his youth.

While in Madagascar, he sold his paintings for little to local hotels who later sold them for much more. He paints for the love of it, and some of his best paintings are truly works of art. He supplements his hands on knowledge in various ways, including lessons from the Honolulu Academy of Art and from retired Punahou School Art teacher Bob Badham.

One of the most impressive things about Esperance’s painting is how prolific he is. He can paint a couple of scenes in one day, a postcard in one hour. Because painting is second nature to him, he can do it quickly. When he wants to enhance a favorite scene with exquisite detail, he will take longer on a painting- up to a day or stretching out touch-ups across a couple of days.

To date, Esperance has painted more than 100 paintings.

You can see some examples of his his art, here:

Pato’s Harley in Hawaii by Hawaii Business Videos Dot Com

Pato loves his Harley.

He loves riding it. The bike is a classic and has never failed him.

In the following interview Pato showcases his bike. It is mostly original but he has added a few new elements.

He also talks about the dangers of riding your bike in Hawaii. While the sport is totally enjoyable, you need to keep an eye out for others.

Some drivers in Hawaii just don’t pay attention. While you are on your bike you need to be careful out there!

Pato loves his Harley. It’s old, it’s big and it’s dependable. He has added some special features but for the most part it is stock.

Hawaii Hiking Tips and A Maui Hike

Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are hiking in Hawaii. First, know where you are going. Get a map or talk to someone who knows the trail you will be taking.

Look for trails that are well marked and accessible. A charged cell phone and a small emergency kit, with band-aids, antiseptic and insect repellant is essential. The cell phone will come in handy in an emergency.

Here is a huge hiking tip: stay on the trail. This is essential advice. Never leave the trail. Do not wander off into the brush. Walking off the trail in Hawaii, even for a short distance, can be very dangerous. Even deadly. You need to stay on the trail at all times.

Wear a hat and put on plenty of sunscreen. You need to be careful of the Hawaiian sun. Make sure you protect your skin with a good sunscreen. And always, wear a hat.

Another important tip is to make sure you have brought enough water for your hike. Water is essential for all Hawaiian hikes. Hiking in even the most pleasant weather, can be strenuous. You want to make sure you are hydrated and have enough water with you. When in doubt make sure you bring an extra bottle of water.

You also want to make sure you have the correct clothing. When it comes to hiking gear, one of the most important pieces of gear that you will come across are hiking boots or hiking shoes. Hiking shoes are not only comfortable, as they are designed for hiking trail terrain, but they can also be used as a safety tool. With strong support for your feet and your ankles, hiking shoes and boots can help reduce your risk of injury in the event of a slip or a small fall.

A hiking stick is another piece of hiking gear that you may want to think about buying or brining along with you. Hiking sticks can be purchased from sport stores, but hiking sticks can also be found by scavenging through your backyard. Hiking sticks are not only nice because they look neat, but they can also help you keep your balance.

Make sure you have packed rain gear for your next hiking adventure. Remember that it can rain in Hawaii without notice. It is always best to be prepared. Bringing rain gear such as a poncho will make you ready for any wet situation.

And remember to make sure you let someone know you where will be hiking. This is an important step you can take to ensure you can be found if you get into trouble on your hike.

Here is a great hike in Maui.
