Kava at Eat the Street in Honolulu

Eat the Street is one of the premier dining experiences in Honolulu. This is a gathering of dozens of food trucks and portable food vendors that takes place once a month.

The food is in a word amazing. There are all kinds of different tastes from Inferno’s Wood Fired Pizza to ribs, lox, bagels, korean-mexican fusion food,  and even deep fried twinkies. The food is all over the map. The various explosive flavors are memorable and enticing. If you go once, you will want to return again and again.

In addition to all of your food groups, you will also discover hidden secrets, available to those who seek them out.

One of the Secrets was a full on Kava Bar right in the middle of all of the food vendors.

According to Wikipedia:

Kava or kava-kava (Piper methysticum) (PiperLatin for ‘pepper’, methysticum: (Latinized) Greek for ‘intoxicating’) is a crop of the western Pacific.

The name kava(-kava) is from Tongan and Marquesan;[1] other names for kava include ?awa (Hawai?i), ava (Samoa), yaqona (Fiji), and sakau (Pohnpei).

The roots of the plant are used to produce a drink with sedative and anesthetic properties. Kava is consumed throughout the Pacific Ocean cultures ofPolynesia, including HawaiiVanuatuMelanesia and some parts of Micronesia. Kava is sedating and is primarily consumed to relax without disrupting mental clarity.

Kava is one of the oldest methods to relax in Hawaii. The unique properties allow it to be to used to take care of ones body and alleviate stress. The most important features of kava is the ability to relax while at the same time helping to enhance thought functioning.

One of the best places to experience Kava is through: KavaBoy. You can visit visit their website, and learn about Kava, right here.

In an effort to discover more, I spoke with Sarah, of KavaBoy.

Here is what she said:

Classic Hawaii Five-O Theme

For those to young to remember, before the current Hawaii Five-O, there was another Hawaii Five-O.

From Wikipedia, we learn:

The origianl series starred:

For twelve seasons, McGarrett and his team hounded international secret agents, criminals, and organized crime syndicates plaguing the Hawaiian Islands. With the aid of District Attorney and later Hawaii’s Attorney General John Manicote (played by Glenn Cannon), McGarrett was successful in sending most of his enemies to prison. One such Mafia syndicate was led by crime family patriarch Honore Vashon (played by Harold Gould), a character introduced in the fifth season. Most episodes of Hawaii Five-O ended with the arrest of criminals and McGarrett snapping, "Book ’em." The offense occasionally was added after this phrase, for example, "Book ’em, murder one." In many episodes this was directed to Danny Williams and became McGarrett’s catchphrase, "Book ’em, Danno."

This is probably one of the most recognizeable theme songs ever recorded:

Pet’s Discount Hawaii Needs Your Help

I received an email from Ricky Baker of Pet’s Disocunt.

It was a sincere email, asking for support for Pet’s Discount.

Here it is:

To our valued customers of all Pet’s Discount stores,

Due to the economic conditions that have existed in Hawaii and the United States over the last 2 years, Pet’s Discount was forced to close it’s doors at Market City on December 12th.

Our plan is to continue providing affordable pet products, services, and pets to our Hawaii customers. To accomplish this, we have scheduled the closures of our Hawaii Kai and Kaneohe locations over the next 2 weeks, as well. Although we do not have a date as of yet, Waikele may be next.

This is a very difficult time for our company and all of it’s employees, having been in Hawaii as a locally owned and operated business since 1994. It is disappointing to us that we cannot serve customers that live in these areas as we have in the past.

Having said that, we believe that consolidating our operations will enable us to provide you with an even better selection of products in the remaining stores, our Bougainville Warehouse location and, for the time being, in Waikele. We are taking steps to bring in more dog and cat foods, supplies, and services to these stores to make the trip worthwhile for all of our customers, regardless of where they live. And as always, we guarantee the lowest prices.

How can you help?

If you are receiving this email, then you have been a our customer, or have requested to receive information about our company via our email alert program. We solicit all of you…help keep a locally owned and operated business open! Come shop at Pet’s Discount Waikele, or come shop with us at our Warehouse in Bougainville – but come shop with us now! Ask your friends to shop with us. Ask your family and co-workers, too. Ask them all to help us spread the word. Feel free to forward this email, as well. We will follow this up with other alerts and notices that refer to saving Pet’s Discount, so please look for them.

Regardless of what happens to our Waikele store in the next few weeks, we thank all of our customers that have shopped in our stores since 1994. We thank you for the opportunity to have met you and your pets and we thank you for our employment that your support has allowed for us to enjoy in Hawaii for so many years.

Mahalo and we hope to see you soon.

I was moved by Ricky Baker’s email. I wrote and asked if there was anyway I could help.

Here’s what he said:

Any help you can give us in our efforts would be deeply appreciated!.  Wish I could compensate you for the help, but just can’t afford to.

You are welcome to use any of the info on the site, in my email, or on our Facebook page in any thing you want to get the word out about our remaining stores.

Thanks so much Albert!

Jack Johnson, A True Hawaiian Treasure

Listen.

Even, if you don’t like Jack Johnson, you gotta love the guy.

First, his music is infectious. He has a wonderful sound. His music grows on you.

Start listening to one of his tunes and you can’t seem to get it out of your head.

He freely shares his music. And that is a great concept.

As a matter of fact, he allows people to tape his concerts. He likes the idea of spreading his music virally. This is the same attitude as the Grateful Dead. So in a way he is carrying on that tradition.

He oozes the aloha spirit. He cares about Hawaii and the people of Hawaii. He promotes Hawaii every chance that he gets. He freely shares the stage with other performers. He is extremely generous.

He also cares very much about the environment. He has done many benefit concerts to help create environmental awareness. Many, many.

Here is something you may not know about him: he donates all the money he makes on tour to charity. Every penny is donated.

On top of everything else, he is very humble. He isn’t real comfortable with being famous.

As I said, you gotta love this guy.

Here is a taste of his music:

Thanks, Jack!

You are a true Hawaiian treasure. I look forward to saying thanks to you in person. And I’m sure I will.

Mahalo nui loa,

Thousands Turn Out for the New Year’s Celebration in Chinatown
Chinese New Year is a time of celebration for Chinatown in Honolulu. The parade draws dozens and dozens of Lion dancers.

Thousands of spectators line the streets in Chinatown. 2009 was an exceptional celebration.

We were a few of the thousands watching the parade.

We had a wonderful time. We are definitely going back next year.

I would love to know how other cities celebrate Chinese New Year. Is it as spectacular as Hawaii?
