Natural Vibrations: Live Music in Hawaii

Natural Vibrations

Natural Vibrations have been part of the Hawaiian music scene for over 20 years. Their brand of music is a mixture of local rhythms and tastes. While their music could be labeled Jawaiian, they are much more.

According to Wikipedia, Jawaiian is a Hawaiian style of reggae music. Reggae music is a genre that evolved in the late 1960s and early in Jamaica. has become popular across the world, especially among ethnic groups.

Their music while tinged with Jamaican styles and rhythms, is a unique blend of music which they can call all their own. They have energy and are able to interact with their audience in a way that sets them apart. They have also been true to their music.

Their latest release,Got This Music, is a testament to this fact. They are consistent in the music they release although Got This Music, shows them spreading out in uncharted musical territory. As Wayne, explained to me: “we usually practice a lot before we go into the studio. This time we went into the studio and are doing a lot of practice to get it right.”

From Wikipedia:

Natural Vibrations was formed by Penidean Pua’auli (vocals), Shane Abraham (keyboard, vocals), Kayton Macarlola (percussion, vocals), Stacy Medeiros (drums), Jehua Evans (bass, vocals), and Wayne Enos (guitar, vocals) in 1993.[1] What started out as a group of friends playing small house parties became a professional music career as the band began recording albums and going on tours. Natural Vibrations soon became one of the most popular bands in Hawaii[1] Although fame doesn’t come easily on the isolated Hawaiian Islands, word of Natural Vibrations’ chill reggae music began to quickly spread to the beach cities of the mainland

The band is able to perform in large festival type venues as well as small clubs. Wherever they play the make believers out of their audience. And converts to the passion of their unique style.

There is an acoustic version of the band, which has regular gigs all around the Islands. Here is an example of some of their music at a recent gig at Tiki’s Bar in Waikiki:

Note the tight musical harmonies and the tight musical interactions of the band members. While each song is obviously well rehearsed there a looseness to their style. A backyard “Hawaiian kine” feel. They are able to jam and take their songs to a higher more fluid level.

When they finished their first set, I asked if I could chat with them for a couple of minutes. Peni and Wayne were very open and forthcoming. They were excited to talk about their latest adventure in the studio as well as an upcoming tour.

This was not your typical interview as you can see here. Wayne explained;

“We’re just a small kind of band of misfits, somehow we get together, and somehow we make music, and it all works out pretty good”.

The music is way more than pretty good. Their music is truly memorable and outstanding.

They have an upcoming mainland tour which will take them up and down the West Coast.

I hope all of your dreams come true.

Recently a group of us went to check out Honolulu City Lights.

It was great. We decided to all have dinner together.

That’s where we met: Funny Bones, a barbershop quartet. And they do surgery on the side. (At least that’s what they siad.

I had my video camera with me and captured the following. This is one of my favorite Chritmas tunes: All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth!"

Jake Shimabukuro in “Just Go With It”

I just got the word that our favorite ukelele player, Jake Shimabukuro will be featured in Adam Sandler’s new film, Just Go For It.

I couldn’t be prouder. I’ve met Jake a couple of times and he is always a gentleman, always gracious, and always an amazing musician. He really shines when he plays: Live

There really is no one quite like Jake.

His newslettter reports:

Jake’s original song, "Angel," along with his arrangement of the popular Police song, "Every Breath You Take," will be featured in the new Adam Sandler film, "Just Go With It," premiering in theaters TODAY, February 11th. Jake will also be making a cameo appearance in the film!

 The film co-stars Jennifer Anniston.

Here is a great interview with Jake:

The thing that I love the most about Jake is that he is truly a humble person. He really is a super-star and yet he is totally approachable. On stage he commands a presence. He is a charasmatic performer. He makes his ukelele sing.

He is so down to earth. He is a wondeful person. And he is one of  Hawaii’s Best Kept Secrets.

There is nothing quite like seeing Jake Live

Jake Shimabukuro Plays With Bette Midler for the Queen

I just received this press release and I had to share it. Jake will be performing with Bette Midler for the Queen of England.

Just incredible news for a Hawaii Boy and a Hawaii Girl!

Here is the press release:

JAKE SHIMABUKURO TO PERFORM WITH BETTE MIDLER
IN THE PRESENCE OF HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN

Jake Shimabukuro, ukulele virtuoso from Hawaii, will perform his arrangement of the Beatles’ tune “In My Life” with Bette Midler for The Royal Variety Performance 2009 in Blackpool, England.

The Performance is presented annually in aid of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (the EABF), whose patron is Her Majesty The Queen. Acts lined up to appear include: Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg, Canadian singer and Grammy Award winner Michael Buble, teen superstar Miley Cyrus, and many more.

Midler, a multi-award winning performer also from Hawaii, has followed her fellow islander’s career and loves Jake’s arrangement of “In My Life,” a Beatles cover that appeared on Jake’s 2008 release, My Life.

“I was shocked to hear that Bette Midler knew my music. I’ve been a huge fan of hers for many years,” said Jake. “She’s like a queen of entertainment. And to be performing with her for the Queen of England… it’s a bit too much for me. I’m just so honored.”

The performance will be Jake’s first time to England and second time to Europe after touring earlier this year in Stockholm, Sweden, Pori, Finland, Nice & Paris, France, and San Sebastian,Spain.

Blackpool’s legendary Opera House is the largest theatre in the UK outside of London with a seating capacity of 3000. The star-studded spectacle will take place on Monday, December 7 and be screened on ITV1, in the UK, later that month. It will be produced by ITV Studios, the makers of the 2007 Royal Variety Performance, which attracted an impressive 9 million viewers.

The money raised from this event will help to maintain Brinsworth House in Twickenham, Middlesex – the entertainers’ retirement and nursing home which is run by the EABF.

Congratulations, my friend. You deserve all of this. You are truly amazing.

Jack Johnson, A True Hawaiian Treasure

Listen.

Even, if you don’t like Jack Johnson, you gotta love the guy.

First, his music is infectious. He has a wonderful sound. His music grows on you.

Start listening to one of his tunes and you can’t seem to get it out of your head.

He freely shares his music. And that is a great concept.

As a matter of fact, he allows people to tape his concerts. He likes the idea of spreading his music virally. This is the same attitude as the Grateful Dead. So in a way he is carrying on that tradition.

He oozes the aloha spirit. He cares about Hawaii and the people of Hawaii. He promotes Hawaii every chance that he gets. He freely shares the stage with other performers. He is extremely generous.

He also cares very much about the environment. He has done many benefit concerts to help create environmental awareness. Many, many.

Here is something you may not know about him: he donates all the money he makes on tour to charity. Every penny is donated.

On top of everything else, he is very humble. He isn’t real comfortable with being famous.

As I said, you gotta love this guy.

Here is a taste of his music:

Thanks, Jack!

You are a true Hawaiian treasure. I look forward to saying thanks to you in person. And I’m sure I will.

The Girlas: A Hawaiian Treasure

There is no shortage of music in Hawaii. you can find it everywhere.

From a back yard luau to neighborhood bars, right into Waikiki, you will discover wonderful music. There is no doubt about that.

Most musicians are covering music that was created by someone else. There is no shortage of cover bands or cover tunes.. Many musicians are just interpreting someone elses material. Not that there is anything wrong with that. But that is all they are doing, sining somebody’s songs.

When musicians play their own music, magic happens.

So it is with The Girlas. These ladies rock.

Listen in to just a small sampling of their music. Heart-felt music. Music form the soul:

You can visit The Girlas website right here.

Enjoy. Thank you, Girlas. You rock.

Hawaii’s Youngest Living Treasure: Jake Shimabukuro

Hawaii truly has many treasures. Its just that kind of place.

One of the best living treasures is Jake Shimabukuro. Jake is a wizard, a magician, a musician with an inincredible amount of talent. He oozes and drips music. The songs seem to come out of his spirit.

Here is a video of Jake, shredding his ukelele.

It has been special to see him grow and progress as a professional musician. He has matured gracefully. Each incarnation of Jake, has seen him discover new directions for his instrument. He has taken the ukelele places, never before thought possible.

Another special thing is that Jake has been recognized as an incredible talent by other musicians. For example Jimmy Buffet has brought Jake up on stage when he played in Honolulu. Blues Traveler did the same thing. He has been invited to preform with national music acts here in Hawaii and on the mainland, time after time. He is that good.

He is well respected. And humble.

He has a talent and gift that he wants to share. He is extraordinary.

This is one of my favorite tunes he does: While My Guitar Gently Weeps. This was written by Gieorge Harrison, but performed by Eric Clapton on the Beatles White album.

By the way: George Harrison, had a Hawaii connection: he lived in Maui.

Here is an incredible piece of music. Amazing.

Here is a version done by George Harrison and Eric Clapton (Ringo is on drums…)

shred on Jake, shred on…..
