Jake Shimabukuro Teaches Ukulele Master Class

Jake Shimabukuro Teaches Ukulele Master Class For “On the Music Path” iPad App

Ukulele maestro Jake Shimabukuro is the latest musician to teach a master class for the best-selling iPad app, “On the Music Path." In his 70 minute lesson, Shimabukuro teaches several songs, including stunning solo arrangements of “Amazing Grace” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and a duet version of his original composition, "Pianoforte."

Shimabukuro starts by introducing students to the very basics of playing the ukulele (e.g., how to hold and tune a ukulele, how to strum simple chords) and then gradually works up to more and more advanced techniques, making this a lesson that will appeal to everyone from novice to advanced musicians. This is Shimabukuro’s first full-length instructional video in over a decade.

The “On the Music Path” iPad app offers lessons on a variety of instruments taught by world-renowned musicians including Jackson Browne, Richard Thompson, Eric Johnson, Lee Ritenour, Michael Chapdelaine, Leland Sklar, and Ravi Shankar.

Each lesson includes 45-90 minutes of on-screen time with a master musician shot in high-definition video and accompanied by complete notation, tablature and chord charts synchronized to the teacher’s playing. On the Music Path is available exclusively through Apple’s App Store.  Students can download the app and the first few chapters of any lesson for free (including the first 5 chapters of Shimabukuro’s lesson).

Hiking Advice in Hawaii, Stay on the Trail

If you are hiking in Hawaii, here is some advice.

One of the easiest ways that you can go about finding a great hiking trail to hike is by asking those that you know for recommendations.  Asking those that you know for recommendations is nice and easy because it limits the amount of research that you have to do yourself.  If you know of anyone, like a friend, family member, neighbor, or coworker, who enjoys hiking, you may want to see if they can recommend any good hiking trails to you.  You will want to try and find hiking trails that are well maintained, cheap to hike, as well safe.

Another way that you can go about finding a great hiking trail to hike is by contacting any of your local hiking trails or hiking parks.  If you are looking to hike locally, you should be able to find the contact information of local hiking trials or hiking parks by using your local phone book. By contacting some of your local hiking parks or hiking trails, you may be able to get information on the trials in question.  In addition to getting information over the phone, you may also be able to request that you have a few brochures, like maps, mailed to your home.  If you live close enough to the hiking trail or park that you would like more information on, you may want to think about stopping by to get the same information in person.

Here is an incredible video of a Hawaii hike.

This is raw footage from Hawaii News Now.

Hiking in Hawaii can be wonderful and magical.

There are countless scenes, vistas and views. You can be one with nature. You will experience things you have never seen.

But you need to take care and be safe. You need to remember this one very

Surfing the Giants at Jaws: 68 Foot Monster

Jaws located on Maui, is one of the most dangerous surfing locations in the world. This kind of surfng is not for everyone. Professional surfers know they are taking their life in their hands when they attempt to surf these giants.

The waves are so massive that the only way to catch them is by being towed by a jet ski or by being brought out to the surf spot by a helicopter.

Tow-In surfer Dan Moore talks about Oahu’s legendary North Shore and how he surfed a monster 68-foot wave at Peahi (Jaws) on Maui.

He explains Jaws was "like a monster chasing me down. The power and the energy there is nothing like it…"

Dan also states" it’s a humbling experience. You almost feel as if you’ve cheated death a bit. The modern surfers of today owe a big debt to the surfers of the past."

If you are ready to start surfing, you may want to start out with one of these surfbosrds:

 ".

You can also read about the The History of SurfingSurfing Books)

A reviewer said: "This is it, the definitive story of surfing, surfers and beach culture.
It’s a big thick textbook like collection of information, photos, stories and anecdotes.
Warshaw has set the bar so high with this work, I doubt anyone will ever have the balls to approach the subject again…."

Prudential Locations’ Photovolatic Panels

Here is an article about what one real estate company in Hawaii is doing to help the environment by going green:

Every day real estate agents across Hawaii sell green to make green. They highlight low VOC paints, dual-flush toilets and reclaimed materials during broker’s opens and solar water heaters and water efficient landscaping during appraisals.

But few real estate companies put their money where their roof is, which is exactly what Prudential Locations Real Estate did when it installed solar panels in 2008. Since then, the Hawaii real estate company has gone green in a scorching new way, investing in a new 87-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system at the company’s Honolulu office. From the time of their installation in 2008 until now, the panels have reduced CO2 emissions by about 650,721 kg, and produced over 382,000 kWh of energy.

The solar panels – which currently generate more than 136,000 kilowatt hours of clean, solar electricity each year – are just one way Prudential Locations is bringing to light its corporate sustainability initiative which aims to reduce the company’s carbon footprint. In addition to installing the PV panels, elements of Prudential Locations’ sustainability initiative including a paperless initiative where the agents submit contracts electronically, use of recycled products, as well as recycling.

“We live and work in such a beautiful place that it only makes sense that as a company, Prudential Locations do what it can to be sustainable and care for our environment,” said Joe Segal, online marketing manager“By installing the photovoltaic panels at our Honolulu offices, we hope that we are able to set an example for other local companies on how they can make changes both big and small and be sustainable.”

The photovoltaic panels currently produce enough electricity to power 382 homes — or all of Pacific Heights – for one full year. But in addition to being good for the environment, PV makes sense for Prudential Locations’ bottom line, saving the company 10 to 15 percent on its electrical bills each year.

The PV technology that Prudential Locations installed converts solar energy into electricity with minimal impact on the environment and offers “net metering” which occurs when solar panels generates more electricity than the building can use.

Installed by Hawaii-based company Hoku Solar, the project has already planted seeds of excitement amongst Prudential Locations’ agents and employees.

“It is a privilege to be able to work for a local company that demonstrates such a deep commitment to the environment and our community,” said Joe Segal.“I think it really speaks to Prudential Locations values and our ability to stay at the forefront — not just for real estate trends, but in sustainability as well.”

Jake Shimabukuro in “Just Go With It”

I just got the word that our favorite ukelele player, Jake Shimabukuro will be featured in Adam Sandler’s new film, Just Go For It.

I couldn’t be prouder. I’ve met Jake a couple of times and he is always a gentleman, always gracious, and always an amazing musician. He really shines when he plays: Live

There really is no one quite like Jake.

His newslettter reports:

Jake’s original song, "Angel," along with his arrangement of the popular Police song, "Every Breath You Take," will be featured in the new Adam Sandler film, "Just Go With It," premiering in theaters TODAY, February 11th. Jake will also be making a cameo appearance in the film!

 The film co-stars Jennifer Anniston.

Here is a great interview with Jake:

The thing that I love the most about Jake is that he is truly a humble person. He really is a super-star and yet he is totally approachable. On stage he commands a presence. He is a charasmatic performer. He makes his ukelele sing.

He is so down to earth. He is a wondeful person. And he is one of  Hawaii’s Best Kept Secrets.

There is nothing quite like seeing Jake Live

You can discover his incredible music, right here:

Pet’s Discount Hawaii Needs Your Help

I received an email from Ricky Baker of Pet’s Disocunt.

It was a sincere email, asking for support for Pet’s Discount.

Here it is:

To our valued customers of all Pet’s Discount stores,

Due to the economic conditions that have existed in Hawaii and the United States over the last 2 years, Pet’s Discount was forced to close it’s doors at Market City on December 12th.

Our plan is to continue providing affordable pet products, services, and pets to our Hawaii customers. To accomplish this, we have scheduled the closures of our Hawaii Kai and Kaneohe locations over the next 2 weeks, as well. Although we do not have a date as of yet, Waikele may be next.

This is a very difficult time for our company and all of it’s employees, having been in Hawaii as a locally owned and operated business since 1994. It is disappointing to us that we cannot serve customers that live in these areas as we have in the past.

Having said that, we believe that consolidating our operations will enable us to provide you with an even better selection of products in the remaining stores, our Bougainville Warehouse location and, for the time being, in Waikele. We are taking steps to bring in more dog and cat foods, supplies, and services to these stores to make the trip worthwhile for all of our customers, regardless of where they live. And as always, we guarantee the lowest prices.

How can you help?

If you are receiving this email, then you have been a our customer, or have requested to receive information about our company via our email alert program. We solicit all of you…help keep a locally owned and operated business open! Come shop at Pet’s Discount Waikele, or come shop with us at our Warehouse in Bougainville – but come shop with us now! Ask your friends to shop with us. Ask your family and co-workers, too. Ask them all to help us spread the word. Feel free to forward this email, as well. We will follow this up with other alerts and notices that refer to saving Pet’s Discount, so please look for them.

Regardless of what happens to our Waikele store in the next few weeks, we thank all of our customers that have shopped in our stores since 1994. We thank you for the opportunity to have met you and your pets and we thank you for our employment that your support has allowed for us to enjoy in Hawaii for so many years.

Mahalo and we hope to see you soon.

I was moved by Ricky Baker’s email. I wrote and asked if there was anyway I could help.

Here’s what he said:

Any help you can give us in our efforts would be deeply appreciated!.  Wish I could compensate you for the help, but just can’t afford to.

You are welcome to use any of the info on the site, in my email, or on our Facebook page in any thing you want to get the word out about our remaining stores.

Thanks so much Albert!

An Introduction to Kauai Vacations

A Hawaiian trip is one of the most exhilarating experiences for any person in the globe. The 51st state of America features a lot of rich culture and history that will surely give you an unforgettable stay. A Kauai vacation is considered a top choice because of the various beautiful sights as well as the traditions that make it one majestic island. Find out more about the place especially its unique layout and geography.

About the Island

The name Kauai probably originated from Hawai’iloa, the Polynesian explorer who is known to have discovered Hawaii. Hawai’iloa was said to have a favorite son whom he named the island after. It also translates to “food season” or “place around the neck” just as how a father would lift his favorite child. The population in the island ranges over 60,000. The United States Census Bureau defines Kauai as Census Tracts 401 to 409. This includes all of Kauai County except for the islands Lehua, Ni’ihau and Ka’ula.

Kauai or Kaua’i is the oldest and fourth largest main island in the Hawaiian archipelago. It is also the 21st largest island in America which lies 105 miles across the Kaua’i Channel, just northwest of O’ahu. It is also called “Garden Isle” with blooming flora and fauna, great weather and captivating volcanoes.

The island is of volcanic origin with Kawaikini the highest peak standing at 5,243 feet and Mount Wai’ale’ale at the center of Kauai at 5,148 feet. It is one of the wettest places in the plant with annual rainfall resulting to deep valleys, canyons and waterfalls.

Lihue Airport is the main air transportation hub of the island. There are several towns and cities all over Kauai but majority of the distinctive ones are located from the northern tip of Hawaii Route 560 to the western end of Hawaii Route 50. Some popular places include Kapa’a, Lihu’e, Wailua, Princeville, Hanalei, Hanapepe, Kilauea, Lawa’i and Anahola.

Kauai resembles the shape of an almost perfect circle over an area of 552 square miles. The location provides warm waters from the Pacific Ocean as well as great temperature any time of the year. About half of the shoreline of the island is comprised of Kauai vacation beaches. You can expect to find some very rare species of animals and plants both on and off shore such as bamboo, orchid, hibiscus, sandalwood, eucalyptus, java plum, kiawe, iwi, nene goose, sea turtle, whale, dolphin and humuhumunukunukuapuaa.

What to Expect

You get to enjoy several open and commercial beaches all across the island as well as the vast richness of marine life. Hiking is another great Kauai vacation activity because of its mountainous regions specifically the Waimea Canyon or the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” rising up to 4,000 feet. Another popular site is the Napali Coast featuring captivating coastline views, free-flowing waterfalls, secret sea caves and tall cliffs.

Enjoy the tropical weather of a Kauai vacation all-year round. Temperatures also drop later in the afternoon for cooler nights. There are micro-climates on the island wherein both lush and dry areas exist Mount Waialeale has a beautiful rainforest having more than 400 inches of rain per year.

Other areas usually have sunny days and warm breezes and surrounding sites around the peak are generally unaffected by the rain. Coastal spots have an average of 18 inches of rain annually. Rainfall usually occurs at night.

You can find some cheap airline tickets here.
