An incredible hike on the Na Pali Coast…

Hiking is one of the most incredible things you can do on any of the Islands.

The Na Pali Coast is breathtaking. You don’t have to hike the entire trail, but if you are on Kauai, you should walk a bit of the trail.

Espo Visits Kilauea Caldera, Big Island

From Espo’s Journal:

Kilauea Caldera is a short walk from the visitors center at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and one of the most amazing vistas you could ever see. Nearby is the caldera’s little sister Kilauea Iki crater.

There is a wonderful trail that winds along it’s rim and takes you to the floor of the crater. Everywhere is evidence of the power and grace of Madame Pele. “Pele, the sacred living deity of Hawai’i’s volcanoes, controls the limitless power of creation through her perseverance, molten strength, and unearthly beauty.

Her passion emanates from her ancient existence. Revered and honored is the fire goddess. She is my spiritual guardian and forever the heartbeat of my soul, continuously giving life to her land and its people. Pele Honoa, Hawaiian woman nmed after Pele, on her 81st birthday.

A very beautiful place on the North Shore of  Oahu is Waimea Valley and the Audubon Center. It is a natural botanical garden that should not be missed. The trail is an easy hike and all along the way there are side trails where little tags identify the lush foliage. The entrance is just across the road from Waimea Bay a very beautiful beach and one of the most famous surfing beaches in the world.

The trail ends at Waimea Falls. If you bring your suit you can take a dip in its pool. It is a blessing and recommended.

Lou and I are a couple of bimwahs and you can see by our blissed out faces that the Hawaiian Islands are more than a  little wonderful.

What happened to the 3,150 banned Christmas Trees?

In my last post I described how 3,150 Christmas  trees were banned from Hawaii due to the discovery of invasive species on the trees. (See the previous post) The Christmas trees were infested with hornets and other unknown bugs.

Anyone who has been to Hawaii, knows  you need to fill out State Agriculture Forms declaring that you are not bringing any agriculture products, animals or reptiles into the state. Hawaii has a frail eco-system and any foreign produce or animals could cause untold damage here.

So what happened to the 3,150 Christmas trees that were not allowed to be unloaded from the jet that brought them?

Here is a story you will not hear about in newspaper, or television report. Radio stations and websites, have no idea what happened. As a matter of fact, the word on the street is: nobody knows what happened.

You can say the is an exclusive for Hawaii Secret Dot Com Blog.  You read it right here, first.

Here’s the story:

I ran into Moana Pacatang, who was interviewed for the last post in this blog.
(See Previous Post Below)

I asked : “Mona, what ever did happen to those Chirstmas trees that were banned from Hawaii?”

“Albert” she explained. “The trees had come from a Christmas tree farm in Oregon. The owners of the farm felt terrible that the trees did not pass agricultue inspection.”

“So they were sent back to Oregon?” I asked.

“No, not exactly” she continued. “The plane that brought the trees, left Hawaii and flew to Alaska. Once the plane landed, it was decided that the trees would be unloaded there. Then a funny thing happened. The owners of the trees asked if the trees could be sold to make money for charity. And that is what finally happened.”

“All of the tees were sold to families in Alaska. All the money from the sale of the trees was donated to a local charity.”

So although some families in Hawaii  got stiffed by not having a Christmas tree, the Spirit of Christmas lived on through the donation to charity, by the sale of the trees. Plus, a bunch of Alaskan families got to enjoy the trees as well.

We have a kind of Gift of the Magi, thing going on here. This to me sounds like a fair trade indeed.

Everyone knows, it is more blessed to give than to receive. So there you have it, an exclusive story and a modern day Christmas Tree Tale. Remember you read it here, first.

Aloha,

3,150 More Christmas Trees Banned from Hawaii

The Grinch really is at work on the Islands. A planeload of Christmas trees, from Oregon, was recently rejected and told to go home after Agriculture Inspectors found many non-native species on the trees. Many of the trees had been purchased by non-profit groups for fundraising. A portion of the trees were purchased by private vendors.

Agricultural inspectors found wasps, hornets and other non-native insects in the cargo hold during a routine inspection.  The inspectors did try to salvage some of the trees by separating them, however since the trees were all stored in the same giant cargo hold, this was impossible.

Inspectors also had the idea to fumigate the entire plane. The idea was rejected by the planes pilots who explained the chemicals would corrode the metal parts of the plane.

Janelle Saneishi, spokesperson for the Hawaii Department of Agriculture said: “Sadly, there were some schools with fundraising trees on that flight, but they had to send it back.” Selling Christmas trees has long been a fundraising tradition for many schools in Hawaii.

Moana Pacatang, Parent, Community facilitator of Waialua High and Intermediate School explained “It’s frustrating because we were excited to get our trees.” She said without the 150 trees ordered, the school fundraisers will have to give back $5,000.

“All we can do” she concluded “is explain to our customers that our trees did not pass inspection. We’re short 2,500 trees on the island”.

A sad day for Hawaii, indeed. OK Grinch, maybe you had your way today, but tomorrow is another day…We’ll still have a great Christmas in Hawaii.

2007 University of Hawaii Football Team: Undefeated

Are we excited here in Hawaii to have an undefeated football team?

You bet we are! UH beat the University of Washington  to erase any doubt that this team is the real deal.

The game was not an easy win as UH was down 21 points in the first Quarter. It seemed at times that the game was surely lost, however, the UH team was tenacious. The game was hard fought by both teams, and UH in the end came out on top.

In the local neighborhoods, you could hear the roar of the fans as they cheered on the UH Warriors. Hawaii has no professional sports teams so everyone rallies around the University of Hawaii.

There was a scare in Mililani, as the power went out for most of the day. Hawaiian Electriccrews worked overtim to restore power just 15 minutes before kick-off.

You can see an excellent slide show created by The Honolulu Star-Bulletinn,

Next stop, an invitation to play in one of the Bowl Games.

University of Hawaii Football, A Class Act

The entire state of Hawaii is experiencing Rainbow fever as the undefeated UH Football team hopes for a major Bowl bid.

The Bows defeated Boise State and laid claim to sole possesion of the Western Athletic Confernce Crown. The win seems to have created a wave of Aloha and everyone, it seems is a fan of this team.

The Boise State game was a chess match with each team trying their hardest to win the WAC championship. There was a lot at stake for this game.

Under the leadership of Coach June Jones, UH has become a virtual powerhouse. There have been a few games that were decided in the last sevreral minutes of play.

With victory easily virtually assured, and only seconds remaining,  the Bows had posession of the ball on the one yard line. Instead of taking the easy score, the coach told the players to just run out the clock. He wanted to show respect to the other team.

A Blue Christmas in Hawaii: 1,200 Christmas Trees Seized

When the Christmas trees arrive in Hawaii from the mainland its always big news. There are newspaper headlines, and television reports. Hawaii residents get excited. Christmas is right around the corner.

Imagine the shock-waves, if you were suddenly told: “No you can’t have a Christmas tree this year.”  It’s almost like the Grinch stole Christmas, once again.

That is exactly what happened this year when state agriculture inspectors impounded 1,200 Christmas trees.

Christmas Tree

The agriculture inspectors were checking containers of Christmas trees shipped from the mainland when they discovered an invasive species. The culprit was a kind of yellow jacket wasp which could damage the fragile eco-system in Hawaii.

The plan is for the suspected trees to be taken to an Inspection station. Each tree will be individually shaken to make sure there are no live insects on the trees. Last year three containers full if Christmas trees were sent back because they were infested by  needle midges. (An  insect that attacks Christmas trees.)

These trees represent a small sampling of the thousands of trees that are shipped to Hawaii each year. Most of the trees come from the Pacific Northwest.

Hopefully the problem will get taken care of and it won’t be a Blue Christmas in Hawaii after all. Read the rest of the story here.

Hawaii Company Discovers Secret to Marketing With Viral Link Tracker

“Let’s face the truth” explained Albert Grande “if you have a website in Hawaii, you might as well be in Antarctica”.

Grande, creator of pizzatherapy.com, grandepublishing.com and hawaiisecret.com, was discussing the difficulty of driving traffic to his websites.

“Nobody cares, if you are in Hawaii. Sure, Hawaii gets its share of publicity but to really stand out, you need to be buzzworthy. You need to figure out how to get noticed. You have to make some noise and get people to listen.”

“I finally figured it out, with the help of Brett Ingram.” he continued. “Ingram is a master at Buzz Marketing. He created a program called Viral Link Tracker, which not only allows you to systematically track everything you do, but also gives you a way to get out your message through viral marketing.”

“Before  I started using Viral Link Tracker, I was just a nobody, with a couple of websites and blogs in Hawaii.”

“Now” he concluded, “I’m still a nobody, but my websites are geting noticed. I was shocked at the turn around. My traffic is building, my offers are getting out there. I’m making noise and people are listening”.

“Blame it on Viral Link Tracker“.

This web tool,  which is free, will allow you to create cloaked links, track everything you do and as well as create your own viral traffic machine.

Grande says”This isn’t the best Internet marketing tool at what it does, it’s the only tool that does what it does.”

Create your own buzz. Go check this out right here, now.
